Economic Profiles & County Data

Information is power.  How does your county compare to other counties in your area?  Which goals for the future are realistic, and how can they be achieved?  Plans and decisions are only as good as the information upon which they are based.  The Economic Diversification Program (EDP) Profiles puts this information into your hands.

The Economic Profiles are developed by the EDP at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin - Center for Energy and Economic Diversification.  The Economic Profiles are designed to meet the needs of local officials, regional planners, businesses, and economic developers.  The information contained in the profiles can be applied to community development activities ranging from form-filling and report production to grant proposal preparation, community marketing, and long-range planning.

The EDP Economic Profiles draw from sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, public agencies, and private record repositories in order to provide information about population, demographics, economic activity, consumer behavior, health services, and public education.  It contains data for the region from approximately 1980 onward, although for some topics figures from as far back as the 1960s are included.  The profiles do not include all census data, but rather the information was selected by its designers with the needs of county officials and economic developers in mind.   If you have additional needs, let us know.

The Economic Profiles are designed to:

  • Help you predict what will happen in the future if conditions remain the same as they are now;

  • Provide the necessary framework for predicting the effects of specific changes;

  • Provide information for grant giving bodies and investors which will help them decide if a community presents a viable investment opportunity;

  • Make it possible for counties to compare themselves to other counties in the area, the region, and Texas, in many situations.

Decisions involving educational needs, employment issues, zoning and tax changes, etc., are just a few of the many issues for which data could be used from the Economic Profiles.  You may look at the basic information on the web:  www.utpb.edu/edp/index.htm.

The EDP compiles Economic Profiles for counties outside of the Permian Basin upon request.  Please contact the EDP at (432) 552-2447 for more information about this or other services in which you may be interested.
